I belong to a worldwide educational organization which focuses on the medieval time period. Pennsic, our biggest event of the year, is a two week long camping trip at the beginning of August. It’s “Home” to tens of thousands of people, but this year, of course, we’ll be staying safe in our real homes. For me, this is the event where I learned henna back in 1993, and where I’ve been teaching and applying it ever since. I am heartsick that I can’t go- but better that than the actual sickness looming before us.
As desolated as the SCA folks are, this is going to hit the local community and businesses hard in their bottom line. The annual influx of 15,000 people to their stores and supermarkets is like Christmas sales everywhere else. It’s not a rich area to begin with, and the absence of this event is going to mean that businesses fail, and kids go hungry.
Then, someone had a great idea- #100kfromtheSCA. If we can’t be there in person to support the locals who support our gathering, we’re donating money to local charities to help out those who make our event possible. Our goal is $100,000. I wanted to help out, too, so I’ve created a set of four themed hand sanitizers. I will be donating a portion of each sale to the United Way of Butler County. My personal goal is $500.
